In this student competition, which is organised as a part of the High Performance Graphics 2020 Conference, students are invited to implement an innovative solution in which they can use GPU hardware features, such as the tensor cores or RTX ray-tracing hardware extensions for a different purpose than the one for which they have been introduced. For example, the attendees of PUMPS 2019 may remember the presentation of a technique for the acceleration of reductions and scans using the tensor core units. The students of the best two projects will be invited to attend the High Performance Graphics Conference at Washington D.C. during July 16-18, with a travel grant. In this case, the local organiser will accompany the winning team(s).

The objective of this course is to present to potential users the new configuration of MareNostrum and a introduction on how to use the new system (batch system, compilers, hardware, MPI, etc.). This is a multi-month student competition. In this competition, big EDA (electronic design automation) companies define a several problems related to the field of EDA which students are called to solve. The competition takes place in teams under the supervision of an academic advisor and each team can try to solve one or more problems. The solutions are ranked based on some predefined criteria and can be improved over 3 phases, out of which the last one is used for ranking. The 3 top teams are invited to the conference to present their solutions, with a travel grant. In that case, the local organiser will accompany the qualified team(s). Moreover, the top 3 student teams receive monetary awards/prizes. Additional bonuses are provided for releasing the developed solution as open source. The first two of this year's problems require background typically obtained in EDA related courses e.g. Processor Design, Nanoelectronic Circuit Design, Algorithms for VLSI, VLSI, while the 3rd one requires knowledge of CUDA eg. obtained from the Parallel Programming Tools and Models course or PUMPS summer school.

The award ceremony of the top 3 teams will take place in November 2020 at San Diego, US.

The objective of this course is to give a panorama on the use of HPC-based computational mechanics in Engineering and Environment through the projects BSC are carrying on. This panorama includes the basics of what is behind the main tools: computational mechanics and parallelization. Objectives: The objective of this course is to give an overview of BSC storage solutions, Hecuba and dataClay. These two platforms allow to easily store and manipulate distributed data from object-oriented applications, enabling programmers to handle object persistence using the same classes they use in their programs, thus avoiding time consuming transformations between persistent and non-persistent data models. Also, Hecuba and dataClay enable programmers to transparently manage distributed data, without worrying about its location. This is achieved by adding a minimal set of annotations in the classes. Learning Outcomes In the course, the Hecuba and dataClay syntax, programming methodology and an overview of their internals will be given. Also, an overview of COMPSs at user level will be provided in order to take advantage of the distribution of data with both platforms. The attendees will get a first lesson about programming with the common storage interface that will enable them to start programming with both frameworks. A hands-on with simple introductory exercises will be also performed for each platform, with and without COMPSs to distribute the computation. The students who finish this course will be able to develop simple Hecuba and dataClay applications and to run them both in a local resource and in a distributed platform (initially in a private cloud)

Objectives: The objectives of this course are COMPSs is a programming model which is able to exploit the inherent concurrency of sequential applications and execute them in a transparent manner to the application developer in distributed computing platform. This is achieved by annotating part of the codes as tasks, and building at execution a task-dependence graph based on the actual data used consumed/produced by the tasks. The COMPSs runtime is able to schedule the tasks in the computing nodes and take into account facts like data locality and the different nature of the computing nodes in case of heterogeneous platforms. Additionally, recently COMPSs has been enhanced with the possibility of coordinating Web Services as part of the applications. COMPSs supports Java, C/C++ and Python as programming languages. Learning Outcomes: In the course, the COMPSs syntax, programming methodology and an overview of the runtime internals will be given. The objective of this PATC course is to cover the basics of a high performance computing (HPC) environment oriented towards earth science applications, specifically chemical weather modelling and climate modelling. More precisely, the course will cover: - Introduction to earth science fundamentals and modelling; - Basic usage of an HPC environment: shell, compilers, libraries, file systems, queuing system; - Build and configure targeted earth science applications with the NMMB/BSC-CTM chemical transport model and with the EC-EARTH climate model; - Execute and monitor numerical experiments using a workflow manager; - Analyse and visualise model outputs with a wide set of tools. In its fourth edition, IN(3D)USTRY becomes INDUSTRY From Needs to Solutions to include more industrial sectors. Our main goal is to cover the entire value chain and provide intelligent manufacturing solutions.

The objectives of this course are to understand the fundamental concepts supporting message-passing and shared memory programming models. The course covers the two widely used programming models: MPI for the distributed-memory environments and OpenMP for the shared-memory architectures. The course also presents the main tools developed at BSC to get information and analyze the execution of parallel applications, Paraver and Extrae. It also presents the Parallware Assistant tool, which is able to automatically parallelize a large number of program structures, and provide hints to the programmer with respect to how to change the code to improve parallelization. It deals with debugging alternatives, including the use of GDB and Totalview. The use of OpenMP in conjunction with MPI to better exploit the shared-memory capabilities of current compute nodes in clustered architectures is also considered. Paraver will be used along the course as the tool to understand the behavior and performance of parallelized codes. The course is taught using formal lectures and practical/programming sessions to reinforce the key concepts and set up the compilation/execution environment.

Its founder, Brewster Kahle, issued a challenge to these early developers: let's use decentralized technologies to "Lock the Web Open," this time for good. 2016's gathering was a call to the Dreamers to build a better Web. 2018's Decentralized Web Summit ¿ Global Visions / Working Code is a demonstration of how far we have come. With scores of prototypes and apps now built with decentralized protocols, it's time to collaborate, communicate and engage the communities who need these tools the most.

DWebCamp is a community-built event where people from all around the world meet to imagine and co-create that better Web. We decided to build an experimental network for an experimental event at a new venue that is itself undergoing its own experiment, but we also knew our 500 expected participants is exactly the right crowd to experiment with together, so we drafted the following design goals: - Reliable local network with 802.11ac speeds - Access points in key areas for client devices (e.g. phones and laptops) to connect - Allow Camp participants to extend or run locally-hosted services on the network - Carry traffic to Internet gateway for client devices to access the Internet with limited bandwidth and reliability - Document setup and learnings for future events or other groups Network Stewards at DWeb Camp are people who are committed to helping other campers learn about and tinker with the local network and Internet connectivity arrangement, and to help people address general device connectivity issues should that arise around them during their stay at Camp.

Why is it worth to learn Deep Learning? Because it is very effective in tasks like: understanding images, understanding natural languages, translations, driving cars and more. Why is it worth to know pytorch? Pytorch is a machine/deep learning library for python mainly developed by Facebooks's AI Research Group. Since pytorch's models are just like other python programs, it quite easy to write and debug them. Hence pytorch is great for research and experiments. Moreover, with new version 1.0, pytorch introduce "script mode" that aims to become also a tool for writing production code. In this workshop we give an introduction to deep learning using pytorch. You will have an opportunity to build, train and evaluate few models. We start with a simple single layer neural networks, go though convolutional ones and finish with recurrent neural network. We will train algorithms to predict sales, recognise objects on images and classify texts.

This course aims to provide an extremely practical vision of the application to real problems of modeling techniques, from the most basic to the most state-of-the art ones, in highly quantitative business environments (banking and finance). The goals of this course is to learn the challenges involved in creating a model in the real world from obtaining the data to the best model to be used and the validation mechanisms depending on the type of problem. Good practices and description of the usual problems in a large modeling project.

The course taught by Dr. Christian Weiss comprises an introduction to the modeling of discrete time-series, by looking at the different models for discrete count-like, ordinal and categorical time-series. Throughout the lectures, models and methods are illustrated with diverse real-data time series using the statistical software R.

The aim of this course is to provide students with knowledge and hands-on experience in developing applications software for processors with massively parallel computing resources. In general, we refer to a processor as massively parallel if it has the ability to complete more than 64 arithmetic operations per clock cycle. Many commercial offerings from NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel already offer such levels of concurrency. Effectively programming these processors will require in-depth knowledge about parallel programming principles, as well as the parallelism models, communication models, and resource limitations of these processors.

This is an expansion of the topic "OpenACC and other approaches to GPU computing" covered on last years editions of the Introduction to CUDA Programming. This course is delivered by the GPU Center of Excellence (GCOE) awarded by NVIDIA to the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) in association with Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC). It will provide very good introduction to the PUMPS Summer School run jointly with NVIDIA - also at Campus Nord, Barcelona.. As an NVIDIA GPU Center of Excellence, BSC and UPC are deeply involved in research and outreach activities around GPU Computing. OpenACC is a high-level, directive-based programming model for GPU computing. Big Data Architecture and Design training teaches the basic concepts and details to take into account when designing a Big Data Architecture. The trainees will learn the impact of technical and functional constraints on the storage and processing choices. Going further the course will show, through industrial use cases, the raise of new architecture patterns. The course includes a practical part with hands-on session on distributed framework. The trainees will learn how to prepare the data and how to process data in batch and in real time.

The objective of this PATC course is to cover the basics of a high performance computing (HPC) environment oriented towards earth science applications, specifically chemical weather modelling and climate modelling. More precisely, the course will cover: - Introduction to earth science fundamentals and modelling; - Basic usage of an HPC environment: shell, compilers, libraries, file systems, queuing system; - Build and configure targeted earth science applications with the NMMB/BSC-CTM chemical transport model and with the EC-EARTH climate model; - Execute and monitor numerical experiments using a workflow manager; - Analyse and visualise model outputs with a wide set of tools. Radical Networks is also an arts festival that considers networking technology as an artistic medium, featuring works that run the gamut from ethical hacks to creative experiments to live performances. If you are a WOMAN and you study a master's degree or do a doctorate in degrees in the field of computing, come to the Barcelona Grad Cohort Workshop. On October 18th and 19th, 2018, the first Grad Cohort Workshop outside the USA will take place in Barcelona, organized by the Facultat d'Informàtica de Barcelona (FIB) of the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and the Comissió de Gènere Dones-COEINF del Col·legi Oficial d'Enginyeria en Informàtica de Catalunya. This first edition is linked to the act of investiture of Mrs. Margaret Hamilton as doctor honoris causa by the UPC. He was the one who defined the term "software engineering" when working on NASA's Apollo missions. The Grad Cohort Workshop began in the USA in 2004. They are meetings of women students of master's or doctorate in the field of information technology. The aim of these meetings is to contribute to the visibility of women in our technological field, to offer the participants the different professional perspectives, to create a networking space and to encourage women not to leave the sector.

The objectives of this course are to understand the fundamental concepts supporting message-passing and shared memory programming models. The course covers the two widely used programming models: MPI for the distributed-memory environments and OpenMP for the shared-memory architectures. The course also presents the main tools developed at BSC to get information and analyze the execution of parallel applications, Paraver and Extrae. It also presents the Parallware Assistant tool, which is able to automatically parallelize a large number of program structures, and provide hints to the programmer with respect to how to change the code to improve parallelization. It deals with debugging alternatives, including the use of GDB and Totalview. The use of OpenMP in conjunction with MPI to better exploit the shared-memory capabilities of current compute nodes in clustered architectures is also considered. Paraver will be used along the course as the tool to understand the behavior and performance of parallelized codes. The course is taught using formal lectures and practical/programming sessions to reinforce the key concepts and set up the compilation/execution environment.

The course is an introduction to data analysis in neuroscience. The aim is to understand standard concepts and methods used to study and interpret brain connectivity (e.g., Granger causality, graph theory, machine learning) with a focus on their statistical aspects. Many statistical problems have a mathematical structure very well defined: they can be seen as generative models that in some cases have some unknown parameters. The traditional statistical methods (hypothesis test, linear models, generalized linear models, etc) and their generalizations (GAM, non-linear, etc) may be used efficiently in particular situations. Nevertheless, it is quite common that they do not capture the totality of the model (for example, the a priori information). Bayesian statistics allows, at least from the theoretical point of view, to solve the model in its enterity. Moreover, since the computers are a popular thing and the programing languages have been extended, as Stan, they also can be reached entirely from a practical point of view. The course will allow to see how to consider and solve froma Bayesian prestective a set of real and practical problems, from the more simple ones (hypothesis test) to other more advanced ( hiden markov problems, Kalman filter, etc) very important in its applications. The objective of this course is that the student learn how to set out the probabilistic structure (generative) of an statistical problem, to use Stan to estimate the parameters and to use this information to take decisions based on the information provided for the data.

We are going to explain how Data Scientist trained to work with R can work with Hadoop without need to learn Scala. We will discuss two possible work¿ows. First approach is using SQL on Hive or Impala. This implies that the most important part of analysis has to be done locally. Second method is to try to do some part of analysis on clusters using sparkR/sparklyR. Both methods have their advantages and limitations. We are going to discover them by working on a project that involves creating predictive model.

AFTERNOON: 3.00 to 6.00 pm.

In this hands-on, we will learn how Machine Learning and Optimization work together to create autonomic networks. An autonomic network is able to adaptively self re-configure its resources to meet current and future conditions. An experimental testbed will be deployed from the scratch, using some useful open source systems. The hands-on is structured so every day a new component will be introduced from both, the theory and the practice. The plan is as follows: - Session 1: Networking environment (Mininet). Introduction to network planning (open source planning tool: Net2plan) - Session 2: Collecting and analyzing network traffic data. Application of ML for traffic forecast and classification. A Monitoring and Data Analytics (MDA) tool will be developed. - Session 3: Software defined networking (SDN). Deployment of ONOS SDN controller. Development of APIs. - Session 4: Autonomic Networking. Monitoring data analysis and network optimization (Mininet+MDA+ONOS+Net2plan) - Session 5: Projects presentations and lessons learned. The scenario will require a virtual machine to be created in the students' laptops on top of Oracle VirtualBox.

I participated last summer (May-August) in the GSoC 2018 under the pcp tool. This is seen as a full time internship during three months and consists on helping an open source community, in my case, I developed a new feature in the pcp framework a tool that helps to monitor servers that is open source. This topic is related to high performance computing since in the OS subject we have done similar things and also I was dealing with threads and events with low C coding. Google is the sponsor of this activity and I received a stipend and a certification of success. I would like to get three credits as an international internship since although I was working here, I was working on remote since my tutor for this project was in Australia and had weekly meetings.

The tutorial will motivate the audience on the need for portable, efficient programming models that put less pressure on program developers while still getting good performance for clusters and clusters with GPUs. The aim of this course is to provide students with knowledge and hands-on experience in developing applications software for processors with massively parallel computing resources. In general, we refer to a processor as massively parallel if it has the ability to complete more than 64 arithmetic operations per clock cycle. Many commercial offerings from NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel already offer such levels of concurrency. Effectively programming these processors will require in-depth knowledge about parallel programming principles, as well as the parallelism models, communication models, and resource limitations of these processors.

This is an expansion of the topic "OpenACC and other approaches to GPU computing" covered on last years editions of the Introduction to CUDA Programming. De 16h30 a 18h00 Urban scale video and data analysis, simulation, and visualization of crowds Isaac Rudomin, Leonel Toledo, Ivan Rivalcoba We will discuss our work in urban-scale crowd video and data analysis, simulation, and visualization, as well as their acceleration using heterogeneous clusters with GPUs. Our main contributions are the development of new behavior models that conform to real data, the ability to scale the system by adding computing resources as needed without making programming modifications and the combination of analysis, simulation, and visualization techniques that help us achieve large-scale crowd simulations with realistic behavior.

To explain the different components that MareNostrum 4 is composed, which were the design decisions taken and why. To explain how the system administration is taken in this Petaflop system. Learning Outcomes: The students will learn how MareNostrum 4 is organized and how it works. This can have some insights and ideas about how to manage clusters of thousands of nodes in a HPC or no-HPC environment.

Objectives: The objectives of this course are COMPSs is a programming model which is able to exploit the inherent concurrency of sequential applications and execute them in a transparent manner to the application developer in distributed computing platform. This is achieved by annotating part of the codes as tasks, and building at execution a task-dependence graph based on the actual data used consumed/produced by the tasks. The COMPSs runtime is able to schedule the tasks in the computing nodes and take into account facts like data locality and the different nature of the computing nodes in case of heterogeneous platforms. Additionally, recently COMPSs has been enhanced with the possibility of coordinating Web Services as part of the applications. COMPSs supports Java, C/C++ and Python as programming languages. Learning Outcomes: In the course, the COMPSs syntax, programming methodology and an overview of the runtime internals will be given. The attendees will get a first lesson about programming with COMPSs that will enable them to start programming with this framework. A hands-on with simple introductory exercises will be also performed. In the information era, any business is made of two parts: production and service. This leads to the servitization of economy, a global offer of goods and services and more competitiveness; hence to more power for consumers; it is not enough to sell but also must meet the needs of consumers (an increase of productivity based on a loss in the level of service quality, certainly would not ensure long-term profitability). Intangibles represent the main assets of companies and organizations. Hence we need to develop measures to quantify these intangibles. The goal of the seminar is to provide a set of well-established tools for intangible measurement based in the Partial Least Squares Path Modeling approach, as well as their main fields of application: marketing, corporate reputation, customer satisfaction, employee motivation, with special emphasis in big data concern. The seminar is organized from the basis of structural equation modeling (SEM), and then the PLSPM algorithm will be presented. A methodology to interpret results will be suggested on the basis of real life cases. Special attention will be deserved to uncovering heterogeneity on models as a way of better fitting the actual relationships occurring in practice. The training sessions will end by real life applications and provide detailed "hands on" instruction regarding the use of the plspm and pathmox packages in R.

The objective of this PATC course is to cover the basics of a high performance computing (HPC) environment oriented towards earth science applications, specifically chemical weather modelling and climate modelling. More precisely, the course will cover: ¿ Introduction to earth science fundamentals and modelling; ¿ Basic usage of an HPC environment: shell, compilers, libraries, file systems, queuing system; ¿ Build and configure targeted earth science applications with the NMMB/BSC-CTM chemical transport model and with the EC-EARTH climate model; ¿ Execute and monitor numerical experiments using a workflow manager; ¿ Analyse and visualise model outputs with a wide set of tools. Prerequisites: ¿ At least University degree in progress on Earth Sciences, Computer Sciences or related area ¿ Basic knowledge of UNIX ¿ Knowledge of C, FORTRAN, MPI or openMP is recommended ¿ Knowledge of Earth Sciences data formats is recommended (grib, netcdf, hdf,¿) ¿ knowledge of R and python

With this course, we aim to present the TANGO toolbox which provides a set of tools to simplify and optimize the usage of distributed heterogeneous computing environments. We mainly target to attract students, HPC application developers and System administrators which can benefit from the tools we developed at the TANGO project. Students of this course will learn how to use the TANGO toolbox to easily develop parallel applications and efficiently execute them in heterogeneous distributed computing environments. Requirements: Programming skills in C/C++ Learning Outcomes: In the first lesson the student will learn why heterogeneous computing is important nowadays. In the second lesson, students will get an oveview of TANGO toolbox components and the provided functionality. In the third lesson, the attendees will get a first lesson about the programming model and an overview of the runtime internals. The attendees will programming with COMPSs that will enable them to start programming with this framework. A hands-on with simple introductory exercises will be also performed. The students who finish this course will be able to develop simple applications and to run them in a distributed heterogeneous platform.

The objectives of this course are to understand the fundamental concepts supporting message-passing and shared memory programming models. The course covers the two widely used programming models: MPI for the distributed-memory environments and OpenMP for the shared-memory architectures. The course also presents the main tools developed at BSC to get information and analyze the execution of parallel applications, Paraver and Extrae. It also presents the Parallware Assistant tool, which is able to automatically parallelize a large number of program structures, and provide hints to the programmer with respect to how to change the code to improve parallelization. It deals with debugging alternatives, including the use of GDB and Totalview. The use of OpenMP in conjunction with MPI to better exploit the shared-memory capabilities of current compute nodes in clustered architectures is also considered. Paraver will be used along the course as the tool to understand the behavior and performance of parallelized codes. The course is taught using formal lectures and practical/programming sessions to reinforce the key concepts and set up the compilation/execution environment.

The objetive of this course is to give a panorama on the use of hpc-based computational mechanics in Engineering and Environment through the projects BSC are carrying on. This panorama includes the basics of what is behind the main tools: computational mechanics and parallelization.
